“Yesterday my daughters asked if they could take a trip with some friends and Heidi and I agreed, so I flew down with them last night, dropped them off here, and now I’m headed back to Texas and back to continuing to work to try to get the power on,” he said, adding that his family was among those without heat and power. In brief comments to a Telemundo reporter at Cancun airport, Cruz again suggested he was only “dropping off” his daughters. Texts from his wife to a group of friends seemed to show the family planned for the trip to last till Sunday. But he seemed to suggest he’d always planned to return home after one night, contrary to reports he was intending to stay in Mexico with his wife, Heidi, and two daughters until Saturday. My team and I will continue to use all our resources to keep Texans informed and safe.”Ĭruz acknowledged it had been an “infuriating week” for millions of Texans who were without power, or dangerously close to running out of food and water. “We want our power back, our water on, and our homes warm. “My staff and I are in constant communication with state and local leaders to get to the bottom of what happened in Texas,” he said. Yes, someone actually trying to “be a good dad” might say “Listen sweetie, I know you’d like to go on vacation but we're in the middle of a pandemic, not to mention the fact that I have an important job to do home in Texas.” Yes, usually when kids say things like “I'd like to play with a few sticks of dynamite” the appropriate answer isn’t “I'll drive you to the store to buy some.” Yes, I'm going to ignore all of this while trying to weasel out of this situation of my own making.“It was not my intention for to be understood as… somehow diminishing the suffering and hardship other Texans had experienced,” he said late Thursday.Įarlier Thursday, as outrage over his getaway grew, he sought to defuse the situation with similar statements. Yes, I am the elected official and they are middle schoolers. Yes, I am 50 (entered a new decade on December 22 if you missed it!). In other words, you can’t criticize me for this horrible lapse in judgment it’s my kids’ fault! Yes, they are 10 (Catherine) and 12 (Caroline). My team and I will continue using all our resources to keep Texans informed and safe.” We want our power back, our water on, and our homes warm. My staff and I are in constant communication with state and local leaders to get to the bottom of what happened in Texas. Wanting to be a good dad, I flew down with them last night and am flying back this afternoon. With school cancelled for the week, our girls asked to take a trip with friends. Like millions of Texans, our family lost heat and power too. Our homes are freezing and our lights are out. We have food lines, gas lines, and people sleeping at neighbors’ houses. The greatest state in the greatest country in the world has been without power. In a statement obtained by NBC News, Cruz said: “This has been an infuriating week for Texans. Yes, rather than taking responsibility for his decision to leave the country for greener pastures and abscond his duties as an elected official, Cruz on Thursday blamed his daughters, who are 10 and 12, for the whole thing. Because really, what do you say? If you’re Ted Cruz, apparently the answer is: My daughters made me do it. Not surprisingly, given how very, very bad it looked, some 12 hours elapsed between the time photos of Cruz and his carry-on surfaced online and when the senator’s office released a statement explaining the situation. After he presumably thought that no one would notice he’d boarded a commercial flight to Cancún as Texas was in the grips of a catastrophic power outage, the senator’s little getaway had become major news, the news being that an elected official literally abandoned millions of his constituents, some of whom were freezing to death, to go on a beach vacation. On Thursday afternoon Ted Cruz’s back was against the wall.
