In the mid 1990s, as Rancid began to be successful, Tim was photographed many times wearing a chain and padlock necklace. (And before you feel like a perv, if this picture is Op Ivy-era, he's at least 21.) This one appears to be a wallet chain he's wrapped around his neck. In some Op Ivy pictures Tim is wearing just a chain necklace. In the late 1980s they achieved some success with Operation Ivy. In the mid 1980s Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman began writing music together. In 1977 Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman were eleven years old, and were probably just starting to get into punk music. Sid's mother later gave it to Gary Oldman. Here he is with his padlock necklace, which was given to him by Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders. In 1977 Sid Vicious joined the Sex Pistols. (Sorry, I wrote a huge paper on this in college, and I've been trying to work it into a conversation for like ten years now.) However, this new breed of writer found that, though they now had the education and success required to run in upper-class artistic circles, they were ultimately rejected by "old money" and the class system. This term was used to describe the generation of working-class playwrights that were given a low-cost education because of post-World War II British social programs. It's possible this movement has an ancestor in the "angry young man" writers of the 1950s. Since that was too long to tattoo on your knuckles, they called themselves "punk". The chain padlock necklace came into prominence in punk circles in the mid 1970's in England, along with safety pins and torn clothing, back when "DIY" was called "being actually poor and disenfranchised by your country's class system". Please feel free to add to or correct anything. Electrohurtz asked me earlier today about Branden's padlock necklace, so I did some research (Googled for like five minutes) and looked at some Rancid pictures (which I do most days anyway), and I have this report.
